Cohousing In Retirement

It might sound like something out of the 1960’s but communes are an option for retirees. It seems the term is now “cohousing” but the sentiment is the same. Here’s an excerpt from Communes for Grownups from the AARP’s website.

In cohousing, the residents themselves plan their communities and choose the appearance. They own their own units and divide duties for maintenance, gardening and other chores. And they rotate responsibilities for fixing meals that are shared two or three times a week in a community building.

If you want to look into some cohousing options, check out The Cohousing Association of the United States for some information. (Thanks to Susan, a TalkingRetirement reader, for a suggestion on this.)

Test Drive a New Career

If you’ve been reading Talking Retirement for a while, you know that most people don’t actually stop working when they “retire.” They just move on to another line of work. Hopefully, it’s one they have a passion for. Vocation Vacations has an interesting idea for your next vacation. They claim your next vacation can be “a risk-free opportunity to test out the job of your dreams under the guidance of an expert who shares your passion.” Do you picture yourself as an Innkeeper, a Tour Operator, or a Brew Master? Check out their site and you might find out if that’s what your next career should be by actually living it for a few days.

Retirement Plan Nightmares: The Movie

image
Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room, a new movie that opened last weekend, is getting great reviews. As you probably already know, Enron’s top executives scammed their investors, the public, and their own employees out of a billion dollars. It left many employees with nearly nothing left in their retirement plans. Watch the trailer at the official movie site.

The Overweight Live Longer?

image
Contrary to nearly everything we’ve been taught, The Journal of the American Medical Association indicating that overweight people actually live longer than normal-weight people. In today New York Times, David Brooks has an amusing editorial on the subject. My favorite bit is, “Life isn’t fair, logic is of limited value and, as Woody Allen observed years ago, everything your parents once thought was good for you turns out to be bad for you: sun, milk, red meat and college.” Funny.

Grab a piece of pie then, read the article.

What if You Get Bored? Try Unretiring.

This is a good follow-up to the Paul Newman piece from a couple days ago. This Miami Herald article talks about people who did retire to “live the good life” and then ended up realizing that what they thought they wanted from retirement wasn’t what they wanted after all. It’s a good story.

The Reinvention of Retirement

Market Place, the Public Radio Internation program, is one of my favorite radio programs. This week there has been a great series on the reinvention of retirement. Topics include the changing ways to save for it and the new ways people live it. Highly recommended.

Reading a Good Book.

I’ll file this under “Things I’ll do when I retire.”

This morning on Morning Edition on NPR, Nancy Pearl, librarian and author, talked about her favorite spy books. I’ve added most of them to my already long reading list. The one I’m most excited about is John le Carre’s Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and A Perfect Spy.
