Retirement: Consider Mexico

Meghan and I were recently in Tulum, Mexico. We have traveled to that region a few times, and always enjoy our time time there. The warm waters of the Caribbean, the great food, and the powder-like sand of the beaches make Tulum a wonderful place to visit. Of course, Mexico offers much more than beaches. It has a rich cultural history and a vast land mass with mountainous regions, farmland, etc.  A friend of ours is currently purchasing property in Mexico with an eye to retiring there. She joins many others who are considering doing so as well. She sent us a link to MexRetire.com, which offers a nice overview of Mexico as a retirement destination. Check it out.

Retiring in Goa

Goa, India
The Toronto Star has an excellent article, Retiring to one’s roots, about people who’ve retired to Goa, located on India’s West coast. In keeping with the title of the article, we’re first introduced to a couple of Indian decent who’ve moved there, even though they are Canadian citizens. But it quickly moves beyond seeing India as appealing to only people with ancestral roots there. Based on the article, Goa sounds like a wonderful place with “a fine climate, low cost of living, and cosmopolitan culture.”

The article also covers the practical matters of living there by covering health care, the currency exchange rate, and even owning your home in Goa.

Foreigners are free to buy real estate in India, but with limits: The law requires that any money invested here must stay in the country, and for the first year, buyers must be in residence for 181 days and file income tax.

If you’re looking for a place to retire to, you owe it to yourself to check this out. Click here to read the article.

Planning for Achieving Your Life Goals

The Dream Book
Ameriprise Financial has a promotional book called “The Dream Book” available as a free download on their site. It addresses how you live and enjoy your life during retirement, the part of retirement planning that we tend to overlook because the financial part seems so important. The booklet is basically a series of questions that help you to focus on your hopes and dreams that you’ve got for your lifetime. What places do you want to visit? What experiences will make you feel like you’ve lead a fulfilled life?

Visit the Ameriprise Financial site for The Dream Book. When you visit the site, unfortunately they require some personal information from you including your phone number and a time they can call you. Although the information is required, you can enter anything you want. They will automatically sign you up for marketing email if you use your primary email address. Should you just make up a some fictional info for them? That’s up to you.

(Talking Retirement is not affiliated with Ameriprise Financial and I’m not endorsing them for your financial needs. I have no experiece with them beyond this book.)

Who Says You Have To Move When You Retire?

Where to live in retirement is an important question. According to an article in The Coloradoan, The perfect spot to retire not the same for everyone, “the biggest question of all is whether to move at all.” The article goes on to list some things to consider when making the decision where to live in your retirement. “Questions you need to answer include whether the community has reliable public transportation and easy access to hospitals.” It’s also important to simply know yourself and understand what makes you happy. The article also gives some short profiles of people and how they made their choices. Read the article.

The Slopes Adapt To The Boomers

Do you want to go on ski vacation? Sounds fun, but when you’re not in your 20’s anymore, you can end up with quite a few aches and pains after that day on the slopes. Luckily ski resorts are paying attention. Some resorts are changing how they groom their slopes to meet the boomer generation “so you can make those nice turns and enjoy yourself in a different way. For people who are a little older it is easier on your body.” I hear knees around the world saying “thank you.” Read the story.

In this story from the Bend Bulletin, you’ll meet a number of retirees who live in Prineville, OR, a community that was recently written up in U.S. News & World Report as a great place to retire. It sounds like a great little town. A local resident, Dave Freitag, says “Here in Prineville, they know me by name. They know my dog by her name.” Get to know Priveville a little better by reading the article.
